Timber Purchasing and Usage Policy

Silentnight Group Limited uses a significant amount of timber in the production of its products. We are very much aware of the environmental effects of using timber and recognise the importance of basing our purchasing activities on well managed forests.

Timber is the most practical material to use in bed base manufacture but we also believe that it makes good environmental sense too. Converting timber into a useful component takes far less energy than virtually any other suitable material and this means the release of fewer greenhouse gases. Timber is also recyclable, biodegradable and non-toxic which are extremely important factors when considering the end-of-life disposal of our products.

Timber is a potentially sustainable resource capable of providing an infinite supply of material if it is well managed. We believe that it is essential to preserve the natural forests of the world in order to maintain the supply of timber for future generations and to contribute to the well-being of our planet. Accordingly we have developed the following policy which applies to all our timber purchasing and usage activities.

  • We will only source whitewood from suppliers who are independently certified from either FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) or PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification).
  • We will only source chipboard and fibreboard based products (such as drawers and drawer bases) from suppliers who use only FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified products.
  • We will never use misleading or unsubstantiated environmental claims in relation to our wood products.
  • Through good product design and the most up-to-date production techniques we will ensure that the quantity of timber used is kept to the lowest practical level.
  • A small amount of waste is inevitable when working with timber. We will seek to ensure that all our sawdust, shavings and offcuts are reused, recycled or burned to provide a useful source of energy.
  • We will ensure that all staff involved in the purchase of timber products receive the appropriate level of training to ensure the effective implementation of this policy
